Capri's Blue Grotto is known throughout the world for its size, the intense blue tones of its interior and the magical silvery light which emanates from the objects immersed in its waters. Visitors to the Grotta Azzurra can arrive either by bus or taxi from Anacapri; or by boat from Marina Grande in one of the tour boats which stop at the entrance of the cave during the trip around the island. In order to enter the Grotta Azzurra visitors climb aboard small rowing boats, with a capacity for two, maximum three, passengers and, lying on the bottom of the boat, enter the low and narrow mouth of the cave. Entrance to the cave is not possible in the presence of south westerly and mistral winds.
The entrance to the Grotta Azzurra is formed by a small natural opening in the rocky wall, roughly 2 meters wide and 2 meters high. The roof of the entrance is situated approximately 1 meter above the level of the sea and, for this reason, passengers are obliged to lie down in the boat whilst passing in to the cave. The boatman sets down his rows and maneuvers the boat inside with the aid of a chain attached to the vault of the entrance.
The interior is effused with magnificent blue tones. The vault, known as the Duomo Azzurro, has an average height of 7 meters rising to 14 towards the back of cave. The erosion cavity is approximately 60 meters long and up to 25 meters wide. The cave continues with the Galleria dei Pilastri, three connecting branches which flow into the Sala dei Nomi, the name of which was inspired by the numerous signatures left by visitors on the walls of the cave. Then there is the Passaggio della Corrosione, and the Sala della Corrosione, the furthest accessible point.
The blue coloring of the Grotta Azzurra is created by the daylight which enters via an underwater opening located immediately below the entrance to the cave. The light is filtered by the water which absorbs the red tones, leaving only the blue ones to pass into the cave.
A second phenomenon creates the silver appearance of the objects immersed in the water: given that the index of refraction of the bubbles of air which adhere to the surface of the objects is different to that of the water, the light is allowed to egress.
It is believed that, in the Roman period, under the rule of Tiberius, the interior of the Grotta Azzurra was used as a marine nymphaeum. There have been those who imagined the cave as the habitat of Nereidi or of Sirens or believed it to be the realm of devils who bewitched all who dared to enter.

Joe Paterno Biography Penn State Nittany Lions

Joe Paterno is 83 years old, born in Brooklyn in 1926, he graduated from Brown, and he is a diehard Nittany Lion fan for life. He is the head coach for Penn State in his 60th year.

Paterno served in the Army during World War II, and then accepted an athletic scholarship to Brown University. He studied English literature and was a quarterback for the football team. Upon graduation in 1950, his former coach at Brown, became the head coach at Penn State. After 16 years as Engle's assistant, Paterno became head coach in 1966.

Paterno lead Penn State to consecutive undefeated seasons in 1968 and 1969, and another undefeated season in 1973. Penn State won its first national championship (under Paterno) in 1982, and another undefeated season in 1986.

Penn State entered the Big Ten Conference in 1993, and won a conference title in 1994.

In 2002, Paterno became the first active coach in 20 years to receive the Amos Alonzo Stagg Award, the highest honor for the American Football Coaches Association. He won Coach of the Year award four times, and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2007.

Torrential downpours overnight in metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia, led to floods that killed two people, a spokeswoman for the Georgia Emergency Management Agency said Monday.

Another person was reported missing, said Dena Brummer.

"Conditions are dangerous," she said about the waters, which have left most of metro Atlanta subject to flash floods. "We are encouraging people to stay at home and to stay off the roads if they can."

Brummer said "numerous search and rescue efforts" have been carried out in Carroll, Douglas and Paulding counties along the Interstate 20 corridor west of Atlanta.

iPhone MMS Not Working on 3.0? Here’s Some Help.

If, like me, you updated your iPhone with 3.0 then went to send a picture as soon as possible only to have it not send – here's why.

According to O2 if you're on the Simplicity scheme or you're a pay as you go customer, once you've updated your iPhone, you need to text 'MMS' to 1010.

This free text should start the process of activating MMS on your phone, and you should be good to send pictures of your cat sleeping within 24 hours.

If, like me, you're a pay-monthly customer, the delay is down to demand on the O2 servers.

All you have to do is wait until the correct settings are delivered to your iPhone. O2 will text you to let you know when you're ready to go, which should be within 24 hours.

If you haven't heard anything by then, you too should text 'MMS' to 1010 to trigger the process.

I know it's a tad annoying but let's face it – we've all waited two years to send MMS on an iPhone, you can surely manage another 24 hours!

The 19 Pound Baby Not Largest Baby Ever Born

A mother in Jakarta, Indonesia, delivered a 19.2-pound, 2-foot-long child on Monday via Caesarean section. In retrospect, giving birth to a 9 pound baby now seems trivial. The 19.2 lb baby is now recorded as the largest baby born in Indonesia and just a few pounds short of the world record holder, a 23 lb. baby born in 1879.

The baby's arrival was reported on TODAY Thursday. Even though the mother did not have to deliver the baby naturally, the surgery was still a risk with such a large baby. The sheer size of this "infant" dwarfs the other babies in the hospital nursery.
"This heavy baby made the surgery really tough, especially the process of taking him out of his mum's womb," Dr. Binsar Sitanggang told Agence France-Presse. "His legs were so big."
Diabetes likely caused the child to receive too much glucose in the womb, according to doctors. This may have attributed to the baby's massive size. The doctors do report that the baby is in good health.
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Canadian Anna Bates gave birth to a baby boy who weighed 23 pounds, 12 ounces and was 30 inches long. He was born way back in 1879, however, and died just 11 hours later.
The biggest baby a healthy mom delivered was another boy, who truly tipped the scales at 22 pounds, 8 ounces. His mom was Carmelina Fedele from Italy, and that was in 1955.
What's a "typical" birth weight? Well, it averages out to about 7-1/2 pounds for an American baby.
If you are having trouble determining how big a 19 pound baby is, he is about the size of a one year old toddler. It's amazing that he is not walking yet.
Dr. Sitanggang commented on the very vocal newborn, ""This baby boy is extraordinary; the way he's crying is not like a usual baby. It's really loud."
The mother of this 19 lb. baby boy has three other children at home. Hopefully she has saved their toddler clothes because those cute little baby clothes are not going to fit this big guy!

Oh, and it has a 1.3 megapixel camera that does stills and video.

Why? Well, because it can, and because the camera makes it different. Does it make it better? Probably not. And for what it does, I’d say the asking price of $125 is a bit steep, unless you desperately need another crappy little camera to carry around in addition to the crappy little camera you probably already have (and probably almost never use) on your cell phone. Hey, you know what else would make an MP3 player stand out from the crowd? A taser. Just you wait, it’s inevitable.

I’m a pretty tall person,which has its upsides and downsides. For instance, I don’t need any help getting things off of a high shelf. This also means that people will bug me to get their crap down from high places. When it comes to riding in a car, most of the time the shorter people are kind enough to sit in the back, knowing that I’d have no legroom back there. On the flip side, when I do get stuck in the back seat, it really sucks. Well if you’re the type that gets stuck in the back often, here’s something that might make your trip a little more bearable.

This Portable Car Seat Laptop Tray reminds me a lot of the tray on a child’s highchair. Heck, it even has someplace to set your drink. But the main purpose is to give you someplace nice to set your laptop, portable DVD player, or anything else. It mounts to the back of the seat in front of you, or if you’re extremely daring, the steering wheel. Seriously? A tray that can be mounted to your steering wheel. No, I see nothing bad about that. Nothing at all. Well wherever you’re wanting to mount it, it can be done relatively cheaply, as one of these will only set you back around $14.

While my hard drive is SATA (none of that ancient IDE crap here), I’d love to switch it out for a faster SSD drive. My main issue is that the speed gain just doesn’t justify the price. But what if price was no object? Just what could you do with say, 24 top-of-the-line SSD drives? You can open the entire Microsoft Office suite in half a second. You’d have transfer speeds topping out at 2GB. You’d even be able to make the kick-ass video seen above.

Looking for a way to spice up daily life in your meticulously constructed LEGO town? How about introducing a zombie infestation? Over at The Big Toy Hut they’ve got a pretty large collection of LEGO minifigs you can buy to populate your town, but it’s the hand-customized figures that really stand out. The attention to detail is perfect, and the custom figures could easily pass as real LEGO minifigs which is important since I’m pretty sure you’re never going to find an official Watchmen LEGO collection at your local Toys”R”Us.

And like anything that’s custom and awesome these figures aren’t cheap at $11.99 a piece, but they’re well worth it if you’re a serious LEGO collector.

Now, on to the relevant issue: the MIR clock doesn’t look like Mir. After much research, I have concluded that this should be called the Resurs clock, after the Resurs 500 capsule launched by the Russians in 1992 to promote the 500th anniversary of the voyage of Christopher Columbus. Imagine if the windows in your home or business could be used as motion detectors to sense a potential intruder before they even attempted to break in. Well that’s the idea behind the ‘Vigilant windows’ being developed at the Fraunhofer Institutes for Applied Polymer Research. The glass is coated with a special nanoparticle material that converts light into fluorescent radiation. As UV light hits the glass, the fluorescent radiation is then channeled to sensors along the edge of the window, and all is well.

But when someone or something passes by the window they block the amount of light hitting it, which reduces the amount of fluorescent radiation being produced, which can be measured by the sensors and used to trigger an alarm. In fact, with sensors installed on all four sides of a window frame the system can even extrapolate the size of the object, which direction it’s moving and how fast it’s going.

At the moment the Vigilant window system is still in development, but demo systems already exist and the researchers claim the special nanoparticle coating can be easily applied as a spray-on finish or as a glued on film.

Hi Everyone!

I'm a newbie :). I've been reading all of the posts on here for a couple of weeks and have been very inspired by all you lovely people living healthier, happier lives. I decided to post my own thread of before and after (well, in between at this point) to keep myself accountable and motivated.

I have a confession - I have always been a yoyo dieter. Horrible, I know... but this is the first time in my life that I'm taking a crack at sane, healthy, steady weightloss. I'm trying to think lifestyle change, but it can be hard sometimes! Keep your fingers crossed for me, and any advice would be very much appareciated!

OK OK OK, I just feel I need to share this with people, and as this is a health and fitness forum...

Anyway, Im a regular history teacher in high school, and have always kept myself fit etc. Recently, I was asked to cover a week of gym lessons and MY GOD.....

A FIFTEEN YEAR OLD BOY CANT RUN 200 METERS WITHOUT STOPPING :(

What the hell have we done to acheive this?

Compared to when I was at school, when maybe there would have been one or two kids in the gym class who were a little unfit/overweight.

Now, our gym classes are about 80% full of kids who have the stomach of a middle-aged man... Nearly all of the boys aged from 12 to 16 who I taught were quite overweight, and seeing that they couldn't even do some of the most simple exercises we did fine even ten years ago was horrible :(:(

I'm a college student that recently moved to Japan in pursuit of a career in entertainment (despite not being of Japanese descent--I'm learning the language, though). Unfortunately I've always struggled with my weight, and I didn't understand until moving to Tokyo the tremendous pressure to be skinny in Japan.

Everyone here in Japan is fairly petite, and the men are usually more slim than the women. Genetics is surely a factor, as is the Japanese diet, which I've been engaged in for the last few months (rice, soba noodles, fish/sushi/sashimi, seaweed, green tea), as well as the amount of walking people do here. As a result, I've unsuspectingly lost about 30 pounds over the last five months of living here. I wasn't even really keeping track of my weight and suddenly the clothes were fitting more loosely, but I really can't see a change in my body type just yet. Even so, I expected to lose a bit more weight than I already have.

That said, I'm registered with a few freelance modeling agencies here in Tokyo, but I'm not getting very many jobs due to my measurements. I'm not necessarily looking to be a model, but there are very few work options for non-Japanese speakers in Japan--one of the few being modeling. Again, as I am in Japan, the restrictions on measurements seem to be pretty strict. For example, the "recommended" weight for a male my height (I'm 5"8, 172cm or so) is 125 lb/55kg, which may actually be considered underweight. I'm not really sure. Then again, it is the modeling industry, so I'm not surprised.

Male models are definitely shrinking in size. (Willowy, wasted, scrawny, however you want to say it.) Apart from super-skinny Japanese fashions, I really love styles by Dior Homme and former designer Hedi Slimane. It's a kind of heroin-chic rocker look that's really trendy now. In the States, I might have fit into what is considered an "M" size, but here I can't fit into -anything-. I have to shop "XL" and it completely throws me off, it's really wrecked my self-esteem. When I lived in the States, I used to think I was slowly slimming down (250 at my heaviest), from L to M size, but now I'm back at square one, weighing less than when I started but struggling to fit into a Japanese "XL"...!!

So I guess my question is: is there a way to get that skinny without totally starving?! I don't want to sound ill-informed (although I kind of am), but it's been hard for me to find exercises for men that aren't focused on building muscle. After all, most people want to achieve--or at least imitate--the athletic, mesomorphic body type. I'm an endomorph (I think), but rather than shape up into a mesomorph, I would rather imitate the proportions of an ectomorph.

Right now I'm 5"8 (172cm) and weigh about 200 lb (92kg). It's not really the weight that matters to the industry so much as the measurements. I can wear a 36" pant now (92cm?) and sometimes squeeze into a 34. But I want to slim down to a 29" waist and (73cm) maybe then some. My roommate--a guy, the same height as me--wears a women's 23" stretch jean (I think that's women's size 0 at Abercrombie) practically every day. It's irritating and frustrating and I'm not sure how that's even possible for someone like me.

I'm not really looking for a magic cure--just science. I browse MensHealth (and other sites) looking for weight loss tips and exercises for men, but for some reason the forums are inundated with a bunch of gym bunnies, along with advertisements depicting the same type of guy. All of the diets center around lots of protein for "getting buff" and a lot of the exercise involves heavy strength training. But that's not really the image I have of myself--athletic and tan and muscular, the guy in all the advertisements. Actually, I really just want to be pale and skinny and have defined cheekbones. From a genetic standpoint, I don't think I'm actually built to have the body type I want, and I guess my metabolism is pretty slow. Even so, I really want to slim down to a 29" waist without building much muscle, and without starving myself and living off cocaine and cigarettes like all the other models I know.

I'm the kind of person that won't start a routine, though, unless I know it's working. Like maybe if there were a bit of logic behind it or something. I would regret shoveling protein shakes down my throat thinking it will give me a slim figure. So, keeping in mind that I don't have a lot of exercise experience or a lot of knowledge about nutrition... I wonder if I would have to build muscle first to lose the extra weight, and then restrict my calories towards the end (months from now, maybe even a year) so that I lose the muscle mass? Or just cardio off all my weight and muscle over a period of several months? I really have no idea. But I need help doing this in a healthy way.

Having said all this, some examples are below. I've attached two articles, plus photos (including one of a young Mick Jagger.) I wonder how tall these guys are? They must be 6" at least, and I'm definitely not that... but anyway, yeah, I want to mimic this body type, I guess. Any suggestions? Moreover, any success stories!?

Using Kontera to increase your blog revenue

Inline text ads were somewhat controversial when they first launched. The ad type adds contextual ad links to text with a post on your site. Some companies do it different ways, with some giving link juice and not clearly stating that they are ads, while others offer a pop-up ad that is Google compliant.

We didn’t run inline text ads when we started The Inquisitr, but with our ad revenue starting to drop off late last year as the recession kicked in, we gave it a shot.

Kontera is the company we’re using. You’ll notice their links with a double underline within a post, with a pop-up box when you mouse-over them. These style of ads play nicely within Google’s rules, and can also be used alongside Adsense units.

So far, I couldn’t be more happy with the service. While they haven’t countered our drop-off in display advertising, they have gone some way to supplementing our primary ads, and in this market it all helps.

Kontera ads though work better on some sites compared to others.

Making Kontera work for you

The key to making Kontera work on your site is to give it enough text to work with. Kontera runs words in a post and looks for matches, so if you do primarily shorter posts, it won’t have as much to work with.

Posts three paragraphs or more work best with Kontera, as it often finds more, and often better matches. The type of content (and the content that gets traffic) is also an important factor. Like other advertising solutions, Kontera does pay better on tech and more serious content, and pays less on say celebrity content. Types of content in between reflect the general market. This isn’t to say you can’t make money with celeb content from Kontera, but you will make significantly more if you’re running more serious content.

Compliment, not supplement

The key here is to not treat Kontera as a solution alone. Kontera works alongside your existing ads, so it’s an easy way of complimenting your existing blog income. In many cases, you might not be utilizing this form of ad already, so you don’t lose by giving it a shot, at least that’s the way I first approached it.

Do they click?

One thing that has surprised me is how popular some days can be in terms of CTR on Kontera ads. On a good day, our CTR can often be 10x higher than the next highest unit on site. Even on a slow day, the CTR rate is still strong. These ads don’t deceive; it’s clear what they are visually, but by being inline users seem more receptive to them; less ad blindness helps.

Conclusion

Inline text ads aren’t for everyone, and even I’ve been critical in the past about the format. But as the recession goes on, we’re in a game of survival now and this is a legitimate way of making some more money for your site. Put it this way: I’d rather do these ads then something that might upset Google, or make the reading experience unfriendly (like putting up ads in the middle of text…not yet anyway ).

You can sign up for Kontera here. Worse case: they don’t work for you, you can take them down. They also offer a plugin for WordPress that makes it nice and easy to set up.

As well he even made weapons at night to throw at visitors when the zoo opens in the morning.

It is this kind of behavior that has been impressing scientists who believe that this is the first evidence that a non-human animal is capable of making plans for the future

Granted many of the videos will be of those ‘gag me with a spoon’ confessionals but the idea is to take you deeper into the contestant’s world. Ya .. like we really need more of that.

Now as someone who lives in Melbourne, naturally I’m excited by the idea, and I know I’m on their cable network (even if I don’t use it). The problem is that coming from Telstra, there’s one thing for sure: it’s going to be expensive, probably prohibitively so, at least at first.

If Telstra prices it at the high end, but doesn’t go overboard, the flow on effects could be huge for the rest of the Australian market. A 100mbps plan at around the $100-$150 AUD mark ($66-$100 USD) would put severe pressure on existing service providers to come in cheaper with their slower products. For example, I pay $129.99 AUD ($83 USD) per month now to iiNet for an ADSL 2+ service that promises up to 24mpbs, but in practice gets 13 mpbs on a good day (it does however have a generous download limit.)

The biggest damage Telstra’s rollout will have is to the Australian Government’s National Broadband Network proposal, which is still yet to be awarded, let alone rolled out. The plan focused on providing “broadband” speeds of a minimum of 12mbps to most of Australia. Given a choice in the cities of 100mbps, or regional and country areas who are increasingly already getting access to ADSL 2 speeds already, who in their right mind is going to use the new Government subsidized network?

The irony is that Telstra said less than 12 months ago that it wasn’t economical to roll out a high speed network without Government support. Now they’re just going to kill the NBN. I’m no Telstra fan, but points yet again for predatory business practices. Although most of us probably won’t be able to afford it, having boasting rights to the network will be welcomed by many Australians as well

Partnering up with AMD, on Monday Seagate announced the latest Serial ATA specification: SATA3. The new specification offers hard drive transfer speeds of up to 6Gbps, which is around 600MBps. This new specification was developed by the Serial ATA International Organization, in order to provide a hefty upgrade from today's SATA2 specification. So just how much of an upgrade is it? Your average SATA2 drive today can offer hard drive transfer speeds of up to 3Gbps, which is roughly 300MBps, so in theory SATA3 will be twice as fast. As CNET notes, it's important to know that software and hardware holds back these speeds, so in reality they're about 100MBps less than they could be.

It seems the legal battles and disputes between companies is going to again have the bloody aftermath trickle down to the consumers. The most recent event is regarding YouTube, and the Performing Right Society (PRS). The news comes from BBC News, and only affects those living in the UK. Starting later on Monday, thousands upon thousands of videos will be unavailable to UK customers, and apparently the PRS is outraged with the decision. Steve Porter, head of the society, said that he was also shocked and disappointed by YouTube's actions. "This action has been taken without any consultation with PRS for Music and in the middle of negotiations between the two parties," read a PRS statement.

My Current Weight Loss Plan

Some back ground info.....

Current Height = 5'10

Current Weight = 255lbs

Current Age = 29

Waist 42 relaxed

T-Shirt Size = 2XL but 3XL feels better

Ok so when I was 18 years old I was only 180lbs (size 34 waist), by age 21 I was up to 210, and I have packed on since then to be at my current weight of 255lbs. I eat basically whatever I want.....its not unusual for me to eat fast food twice a day. I drink coffee in the mornings, then switch to soda's and finally ice tea at night. I am 4 months away from being 30 years old and I want to drop some serious weight before then.

I have short term goals of 10lbs, but my long range goal is to drop down to 200lbs, possibly with the addition of 20lbs of muscle gain. Not too sure how easy this will be. I am looking to lose 3lbs per week, I have the following plan for cutting over 10,000 calories per week......tell me how it sounds.

Cut all calories from drinks

750 calories per day times 7 days = 5250 Calories per week

Cut out my fast food intake

Roughly 3000 calories per week.....probably more though.

Start a walking plan

I work at a huge Estate, I have a 1.5 mile route set up that has hills....I am working up to walking it twice a day for a total of 15 miles per week.

I also have a weekend walk route in my neighborhood, 3 miles total......for an additional 6 miles per week.

Hitting the Gym

I plan to hit the gym three times per week, for strength training......my workout is split like this....

Tues = Arms and Abs

Wed = Chest and Back

Fri = Legs and Shoulders

So that is basically my weight loss plan for right now, at this point I am concentrating more on the exercising than the diet.....as I don't want to shock my body. I figure once I get a few weeks into this plan, that I can start scaling back on my food and seeing results.

Basically my plan breaks down like this.....

Sunday = 3 mile home walk

Monday = (2) 1.5 mile work walks

Tuesday = (2) 1.5 mile work walks, (Gym) Arms and Abs

Wednesday = (2) 1.5 mile work walks, (Gym) Chest and Back

Thursday = (2) 1.5 mile work walks

Friday = (2) 1.5 mile work walks, (Gym) Legs and Shoulders

Saturday = Sunday = 3 mile home walk

Hi there,

Thought i would start a diary to keep a track of how im doing and get some support. I have struggled with my weight a long time and yoyo-ed over the years. I have now got up to my biggest. (Starting weight 193.6 on 2/23).

This time is hopefully my last attempt to ditch the weight and i really am going to work hard and stick with it this time. My biggest obstactle is not seeing results, but this time i am just going to be patient. I want to get down to 149, and then reasses my goals.

So to start off i will just recap my activities last week.

3/2 Weigh in day... 187.44 (Lost 6.16 this week!)

AM - Cardio 40 min

3/3 AM - Cardio 40min

PM - Walk 35min

3/4 PM - Walk 50min

3/5 AM - Weights Upper Body (Getting Lower body program done nxt wk)

3/6 DAY OFF

3/7 AM - Weights Upper Body

3/8 AM - HIIT (25min)

PM - Walk 50 min

3/9 Weigh in day.... 185.24 (Lost 2.2 this week)

AM - Weights Lower Body

So that brings me up to today.

I struggled yesterday with motivation. Its hard when you lose a lot one week, and then hardly anything the next week. I felt like i really tried hard last week with excercise (compared to my NO excercise before that). And after all that excercise i hoped to lose more than 2.2 in a week. I will just have to try even harder this week!!

This is the third incident in a week. On Friday, a Chinese frigate crossed Impeccable’s bow at a range of about 100 yards, according to the Pentagon, and on March 4, a Chinese Bureau of Fisheries Patrol vessel shinned a high-intensity spotlight at the USNS Victorious several times.

The USNS Impeccable is a 5,368 ton, 281 foot (86m) Victorious-class ocean surveillance ship. The main role of the ship is to track “undersea threats,” or in other words, submarines.

Coming with 50 feet of a ship this size is aggressive to say the least. If there had been a collision, the incident would be larger again, and could possibly have been used as a pretext for a breakdown in Chinese-American relations by either side. The Chinese are undoubtedly annoyed about American ships lurking off their coast, but the presence of the ships is fair under international law: these ships were in international waters and had a right to be there. Lets hope that there’s not any more close calls or worse still, an actual incident. It might not end up with a war, but if China cut off its borrowing to the United States, the net result wouldn’t be that far removed.

McClatchy cuts 15% of Workforce
